As I was riding the subway one day, I noticed an ad “Roman,” get The ad was about erectile dysfunction meds. The ad states “% of men experience erectile dysfunction but 52% have a ‘friend’ want to learn more.” I thought it was a tongue-in-cheek ad on a serious subject. The ad continues, “meds prescribed online delivered to your ‘friend’s’ door.” I decided to do some research on the topic since according to the Cleveland Clinic, it is estimated that about 30 million men in the United States are affected by erectile dysfunction. Men age 40-70 years old, 52% have reported erectile dysfunction. Also men age 18-60 years old, 30% have reported impotence.

What is erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence you might ask? It is the inability for a man to keep an erection long enough for normal, satisfying sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is often associated with vascular disease. Many men as they get older, remain unaware of the link between ED and vascular disease. When these men go to the doctor for help with impotence, they get a prescription and leave with no idea of the creeping dangers that may lie in store for them. Almost half of all men experience ED only occasionally.

Erectile dysfunction can have physical, psychological, or drug-induced causes. Now most researchers and doctors believe that physical factors are responsible for the majority of ED causes. Several conditions may contribute to impotence by impairing blood flow to the penis. These include atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, multiple sclerosis, chronic alcohol, and smoking. Symptoms include loss of sexual desire (libido), premature ejaculation, or the inability to achieve orgasm. Smokers have been shown to have an increased incidence of ED along with obese men.

The holistic cures for erectile dysfunction include:

A study showed that men with erectile dysfunction that was not linked to physical causes was successfully treated by hypnosis. In one trial, three hypnosis sessions per week, later decreased to one per month over a six month period led to improvement in 75% of the participants.

Acupuncture is also beneficial for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Electroacupuncture, acupuncture accompanied by electrical stimulation, was performed on various acupuncture points in men with ED in a preliminary trial of men with the condition. Two treatments were administered every week for one month and an improvement was observed in 15% of the participants and an increase in sexual activity was reported by 31% of the men. Another trial resulted in 50% of the men. Placebo was shown to also produce a large improvement in sexual dysfunction, similar to acupuncture. (resource healthwise)

Garlic, studies show that allicin, a component in garlic, helps improve blood flow consequently, this can help deal with erectile dysfunction. It also offers some protection against testicular oxidative damage and spermiotoxicity. Try chewing three to four cloves of garlic daily for about three to four months. Mix together one teaspoon of garlic powder and cayenne pepper powder. Have it with water a few hours before going to bed, repeat daily.

Onions, like garlic, also help to treat ED. It helps to treat involuntary loss of semen during sleep, and also help in the protection against testicular damage. Slice a large white onion and cook in butter on a low fire and eat it with honey before having dinner daily for about a month. Also, chop two large onions and steep for ten minutes in two cups of warm water. Drink half a cup of the liquid three times daily for one month.

Carrots have been beneficial for the eyes, but studies also reveal that the carotenoids, vitamins, and minerals act as antioxidants. Studies on male rats show that carrots can exert an effect on fertility by elevating testosterone levels in them. Make a juice of carrots, celery, beets and garlic cloves in a juicer and drink once or twice daily. Also, drink a glass of warm milk with two teaspoons of grated carrots. Include raw carrots in your daily diet.

Ginger also helps to relieve impotency and premature ejaculation. Drink two to three cups of ginger tea daily. It’s actually one of my favorite teas to drink for another remedy like a headache or stomach ache. Prepare a mixture of two teaspoons each of ginger paste and honey. Have it three times a day for one to three months. Mix half teaspoon of ginger juice, one tablespoon of honey with one soft boiled egg. Eat this mixture once a day before going to bed for a month.

Korean Red Ginseng, is believed to be an effective natural remedy. Studies have shown it has significant therapeutic effects on penile rigidity, libido, and patient satisfaction. It is one of the most popular and proven natural remedies. The recommended dosage for Korean Red Ginseng is between 600 and 1,000 mg three times daily. Please consult with your doctor before taking this supplement, because it can interact with other medications which can cause an allergic reaction.

Vitamins that are effective remedies for erectile dysfunction which helping to increase the blood flow in the body include, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Vitamin E, Vitamin K and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). These are a few of the vitamins which will help in the treatment.

Foods can help reverse the effect of erectile dysfunction and help with a better mental well being. Try a high fiber and Mediterranean diet. A Mediterranean diet provides a heart-healthy diet for everyone and especially for anyone suffering from erectile dysfunction. Avoid processed and junk food, consume alcohol in moderation, try to give up smoking and reduce stress. Exercise and get an adequate amount of sleep. When you maintain a healthy lifestyle, sexual function will improve dramatically. A healthy diet includes incorporating fish with omega 3 like salmon, sardines and trout, lean poultry, and plant-based proteins such as legumes, nuts, and seeds. Also, whole grains with plenty of vegetables and fruits, especially those with powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber are beneficial. Healthy fats like olives, avocados, seeds, and nuts. Stress reducing activities include yoga, meditation, massage and hot water. Exercise includes cardio core, strength and flexibility training, and specific pelvic floor muscle exercises improve the strength, power and endurance of the penile “rigidity” muscles.

When you maintain a lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise with mindful meditation and yoga to reduce stress, this will maintain a healthy sexual lifestyle for you and your partner.
